Grants Writing Workshop

The first grants writing workshop Securing external funding for your research was run by the Research Office on 22 July 2014 for all staff from across the University. DVC (Research & International), Prof John Bythell led the workshop, introducing various themes for successful grants writing, including:
1) The importance of having a good idea in the first place;
2) Refining your ideas;
3) Identifying appropriate funding sources;
4) Finding industry and/or policymaker partners;
5) Building the best research team;
6) Clearly stating the desired project outcomes;
7)Writing a great proposal;
8) Communicating results to all stakeholders and
9) Delivering all reports on time and in a professional manner (thinking about the next grant!).

The purpose of the workshops is to introduce and develop the skills and abilities to successfully apply to external donors for a research grant. They are aimed at academic staff at USP with a research expectation in their contract or to staff and final year postgraduate research students who may want to develop these skills for the future. It is aimed mainly at people wishing to address a discrete research question (a typical research proposal) rather than a more senior researcher writing a large proposal for core funding within an area or centre.

If you missed the July workshop, please sign up for one of the future workshops (email Research@usp.ac.fj). The next one is tentatively planned for 5 August 2014 and there will be further repeats run throughout the year.

Staff may also wish to sign up for one of the more specific workshops Securing internal USP funding for your research run by the Director of Research, Dr Jito Vanualailai. These workshops will review the different mechanisms, forms and applications procedures for funding via Faculty Research Committee and University Research Committee (the Strategic Research Themes). While internal research funding is limited, it is an important way of obtaining the preliminary research data, securing partnerships and building a research team that will be necessary for securing external research funding.

Venue: TBC

Thanks
John
