Master Degree by thesis Research Scholarship Remote Sensing Applications & Information Systems

The School of Geography, Earth Science and Environment (SGESE), Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE) at USP is offering four Master’s degree scholarships by thesis with a starting date of Semester 1, 2017.   The scholarship covers tuition, student fees and living allowance for two semesters.   The scholarship does not cover relocation expenses, establishment or dependents allowance.  

  1. Fiji mangrove Project:
    1. Combining field data and UAV imagery for mapping and monitoring mangrove ecosystems in a traditional environmental management setting
    2. Developing Cloud-based Environmental Information systems for data sharing

If suitable applicants are found, funding may be available for:

  1. Use of remote sensing technologies for surveillance of fishing vessels in the Pacific region
    1. Determining efficient approaches for surveillance using airborne optical imagery
    2. Determining efficient approaches for surveillance using satellite radar imagery

A specific research topic will be chosen through the guidance of the Principal Supervisor.

Research Degree at USP

Selection criteria for scholarship candidates are as follows:

  • Course work in geospatial science (E.g. GS201, GS301 or GS211) or demonstrated work experience in geospatial science or information science is highly desirable.
  • Students coming from other disciplines such as physics, computer science, engineering or related disciplines will also be considered.
  • A completed Postgraduate Diploma or equivalent in a relevant discipline from USP is desirable.
  • Must have an undergraduate GPA and postgraduate diploma GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Must be a citizen of the 12 member countries of USP.
  • Candidates with demonstrated experience and/or interest in remote sensing applications will be given preference.
  • Candidates with good writing and analytical skills will be given preference.

Apply for admission into one of the postgraduate programmes offered by FSTE through USP Student Academic Services (SAS).  With your application include the following: 

  1. transcripts from both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes,
  2. one page letter explaining why you believe you are a good candidate for this scholarship, and
  3. letters of reference from two people who are familiar with your school or work experience.
