Share your idea, win a trip to Berlin.
Great minds, 3 minutes, 1 day.

Opportunity for the next generation of early-career innovators, trailblazers, creators, and visionaries to share, in 3 minutes, their research, business model or initiative, showcasing a breakthrough that creates a positive impact on science and society and compete to win a trip to the Falling Walls Lab Berlin.

Rātu Tuesday 7 September 2021 Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington

Falling Walls Lab New Zealand is a challenging, inspiring and interdisciplinary format to showcase the next generation of early-career innovators, trailblazers, creators, and visionaries.

In a 3-minute presentation, participants will present their research, business model or initiative, showcasing a breakthrough that creates a positive impact on science and society.  All disciplines are welcome: from agriculture, medicine, economics, engineering to social science and the humanities. The event is inspired by the world-changing event of the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, with the question at every Falling Walls gathering: Which walls will fall next?

Network with fellow innovators from different disciplines, equally passionate and inspired to showcase their solutions to some of the biggest challenges of our time.

The most intriguing presentation will be selected to represent Aotearoa New Zealand and travel to the Falling Walls Lab Global Finale held in Berlin, Germany on 7 November, where they will compete to become the Breakthrough Winner of the Year in the Emerging Talents category of Falling Walls.

At the Berlin Lab, 100 finalists from across the globe will receive the opportunity to present their work in front of a distinguished jury and a ticket to attend the Falling Walls Conference on 7-9 November, to meet and listen to some of the world’s forward-thinking scientists and boldest visionaries.  Take part in a Springer Nature event on science publishing, and exclusive extended programme which includes pitch training, science excursions ‘Insights into German Research’ and brain dates.

Falling Walls Labs are organised by independent partners of Falling Walls Foundation and are held in locations across the globe with the winners from each Lab being invited to the Falling Walls Lab Global Finale, Berlin on the 7 November. The Falling Walls Lab Finale is run by the Falling Walls Foundation.

Falling Walls Lab New Zealand is hosted by Royal Society Te Apārangi with support from the German Embassy in Wellington and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Catalyst: Leaders Fund.

Information regarding COVID-19:

In person participation of applicants residing outside New Zealand is dependent on quarantine-free travel between New Zealand and their place of residence being possible. If quarantine-free travel is not possible, the Society will invite the applicant to participate via video link. Likewise, participation in the Falling Walls Lab Global Finale in Berlin by the Aotearoa New Zealand winner, may take place via video link if quarantine free travel is not an option.

We anticipate being in COVID-19 Level 1 for this event. We aim to be ready to adjust to the circumstances in Mahuru September, and note we may have to shift to a ‘virtual’ Lab. We will keep you informed if there are any changes to Falling Walls Lab New Zealand 2021.
