Meet the innovator protecting our oceans in the Solomon Islands
Dr Katy Soapi has been recognised as a key regional expert on marine genetic resources and was selected as an expert adviser to the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner (OPOC) to support the Pacific countries during negotiations at the intergovernmental conferences on marine biodiversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) at the UN. Her role as an innovator was highlighted by The World Bank in their feature article titled:
Dr Wairiu to lead “small islands chapter”
Dr. Morgan Wairiu (USP) is a coordination lead author of the “small islands chapter” of the IPCC Working Group II of the Sixth Assessment Report, building on his research on climate change adaptation and risk assessment. Morgan gave a talk on 9th July on the Working Group II contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report, which is scheduled to be finalised in 2021. He is the first Pacific Islander to be selected as coordinating lead author since the IPCC reporting began in 1990.
