PGR Residency Scholarship

The Postgraduate Research [PGR] Residency Scholarships are funded by The University of the South Pacific for graduate students based away from the campus of their principal supervisor to be located on the same campus. The scholarship is aimed at enabling the student to take advantage of the increased contact hours with the principal supervisor, and enable early completion of the research programme. The USP Postgraduate Residency Scholarship will only be awarded to candidates who can clearly demonstrate that their thesis write-up will be fast-tracked due to the scholarship.


To be eligible for the USP Postgraduate Research Residency Scholarships, a student must:

  • be enrolled in a full research degree programme at the University;
  • the student must be in the writing-up stage or have completed data collection or equivalent;
  • in the opinion of the supervisor(s), have made substantial progress towards write-up of the thesis;
  • be able to complete a substantial portion of their thesis within the nominated period. The maximum scholarship period is six months.

Selection Criteria and Process

The scholarship is awarded to the applicant who in the opinion of the selection committee best demonstrates:

  • thesis progress to date, including the likelihood of completion by the nominated expiry date of the scholarship;
  • the strength of recommendation from the relevant school/faculty and that the USP Postgraduate Research Residency Scholarship will clearly result in an earlier thesis submission date than otherwise anticipated;
  • the strength of the Principal Supervisors endorsement and guaranteed commitment for the duration of the scholarship
  • details of a signed completion plan; and
  • the student’s publications record or other evidence of relevant research output.

Duration of Award

Subject to the recipient meeting the conditions of the scholarship:

  • the scholarship is tenable for the period specified in the award contract, up to a maximum of six month;
  • no extensions are possible beyond the end date specified in the award contract;
  • all benefits ceases upon submission of the thesis, or at the expiry date of the scholarship as specified in the award contract, whichever occurs first.

Suspension of the Scholarship

Leave of absence will not be available during the period for which the scholarship is awarded unless there are exceptional cases, such as major illness, death in the family other extenuating factors which are beyond the control of the student and the school/supervisor.

The Recipients may apply to suspend their scholarship for up to four weeks in exceptional cases.

  • Applications to suspend the scholarship are considered only if written support is received from the supervisor(s) and the Faculty Associate Dean Research detailing the exceptional circumstances surrounding the request for suspension.
  • Postgraduate Research Residency Scholarships do not contain any leave provisions, and suspensions will not be granted to enable the awardee to accept paid employment or to take recreational leave.
  • Failure of the recipient to resume study and take up the scholarship again within the specified time may result in the scholarship being terminated.

Scholarship Benefits

A USP Postgraduate Research Residency Scholarship Award will comprise of the following:

  • Living allowance of FJD1,500 per month for private students
  • Living allowance of FJD750 per month for sponsored students
  • Dependents Allowance of $906.90 per month (only to qualifying awardees)
  • One economy class return airfare for the scholarship recipient

Scholarship Conditions

Successful applicants will be required to sign a USP Postgraduate Research Residency Scholarship contract agreeing to the following:

  • Successful applicants will be required to enrolled for Masters by full thesis or PhD studies over the period for which the scholarship is awarded;
  • During the term of the scholarship, progress must be monitored on a regular basis by the Principal Supervisor, in accordance with timelines outlined in the completion plan;
  • The scholarship is for residency at any of the USP Campuses;
  • Failure to make satisfactory progress in line with the timeline may result in the cessation of scholarship allowances;
  • Submission of a completed Mid-point Milestone Scholarship Report to the Research Student Coordinator via email: In this report applicants will need to document the progress made and indicate the timetable for submission of the thesis deadline. The Principal Supervisor and Associate Dean Research will need to confirm the details indicated in the report by signing the form before it is submitted to the Research Student Coordinator;
  • Failure to submit the form by the date indicated in the timeline for the period for which the student was awarded the scholarship will result in immediate cessation of the scholarship.
  • Only one Postgraduate Research [PGR] Residency Scholarship will be awarded per student, per candidature.


Applications are closed. 

Applications must include the following:

  1. A completed Applicant Detail Form
  2. a detailed summary of the thesis candidature status at the time of application;
  3. a checklist of tasks to be completed prior to the commencement of the scholarship;
  4. a completion plan, detailing the work to be undertaken by the student and supervisor(s) within the specified period of the scholarship, and signed by the student and the supervisor(s);
  5. a completed Endorsement Form [to be filled by the principal supervisor, and the Faculty Associate Dean Research]
  6. a copy of the latest Progress Report;
  7. a list of the student’s publications and conference presentations (if applicable) or other evidence of research output;
  8. a statement by the supervisor explaining how the scholarship will enable the timely completion of the thesis, and shorten the otherwise anticipated completion time;
  9. the proposed start and end dates of the scholarship.
